Bright Futures: Jiyan’s Story
March 22, 2026 | by
Jiyan (12 years old) was born deaf and as a young child, lived with both his parents. When he was just five years old, his life changed dramatically after he was struck by a motorbike, leaving him with a serious head injury and damage to his leg. Since then, his parents have separated, and Jiyan now spends time with each parent separately, navigating a childhood shaped by change and recovery.
Two years ago, Jiyan began attending inclusive Deaf education programs through RHERI in Nepal. For the first time, he entered a classroom where communication was accessible.
Jiyan quickly began using sign language to express his needs, thoughts, and feelings. He loves playing with his classmates and sharing meals filled with his favourite foods. His growing ability to communicate has helped him build friendships and connect more deeply with the people around him.
Jiyan’s family hopes for a future where he grows into a happy, healthy adult. Someone with strong relationships, emotional wellbeing, and meaningful economic opportunities. With continued support, accessible education, and a nurturing environment, that future is within reach.
Our communities are largely designed with hearing people in mind, often overlooking the everyday safety needs of children who are deaf. Something as simple as not hearing an approaching engine or car horn can place a child at significantly greater risk of serious harm. This is just one of the many reasons RHERI advocates for local and national changes that prioritise the safety, inclusion, and independence of deaf children in their daily lives.
With the right support, children like Jiyan can build the futures they deserve. You can help by making a donation to support the children at RHERI, share our newsletter sign-up form and by following us on social media.
