A message from Board Director, Sanjeela

High in the hills of Nepal, my community, the Gandharva, has long been known for carrying stories, knowledge, and news through songs and dances passed down across generations. Yet despite this rich cultural legacy, the Gandharva caste has historically been among the most marginalized in Nepal, labeled “untouchable,” excluded from opportunity, education, and basic human dignity.
I share this not only as my history, but as the foundation of why SafeHavens matters so deeply to me.
Growing up in a community where access to education was never guaranteed, I learned early that even small opportunities can create profound change. During my master’s studies, I was sponsored by one of the generous women from the USA with just $100 per month for two years.
To some, this may seem like a modest amount. To me, it was life-changing. That support covered basic needs, eased daily stress, and, most importantly, allowed me to stay in school and complete my degree. That $100 did not simply support my education; it reshaped my future.
Today, I hold degrees in Microbiology, Rural Development, Food and Nutrition, and Gerontological Studies, and I am currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) at Texas A&M University. None of this would have been possible without timely support and belief when I needed it most.
That is why SafeHavens exists.
SafeHavens creates spaces where vulnerable individuals, especially children and youth, are seen, supported, and given the chance to thrive. The organization understands that meaningful change does not always come from large gestures; it often begins with consistent, compassionate support that meets people where they are.
As a Board Director, it is an honor to serve an organization that aligns so closely with my own journey and values. SafeHavens gave me the platform to serve communities like the one I come from and to help transform adversity into opportunity.
To our supporters, partners, and community members: thank you for being part of this mission. Your commitment, no matter the size, has the power to change lives, just as it changed mine.
With gratitude and hope,
Sanjeela Gandhari
