Challenges in the Deaf community
April 6, 2025 | by
At SafeHavens, we believe that health is a right, not a privilege. This World Health Day, we are shining a spotlight on an often-overlooked issue: the need for better support, access, and inclusion for the Deaf community.
If you saw last week’s newsletter, you would’ve read about our ongoing partnership with RHERI on the Hearing Avasar! Project, where we are working to treat the health needs of 43 deaf and hard-of-hearing children.
In rural Nepal, deaf individuals face unique challenges when accessing healthcare, education, and employment. Medical facilities lack sign language interpreters, leaving deaf patients unable to communicate their health concerns effectively. Local schools lack the resources needed for deaf education and workplaces are still catching up when it comes to inclusive hiring practices.
The result? Higher health risks, reduced opportunities, and unnecessary isolation.

Kalpana (pictured) is 19 years old, has been a resident at the RHERI home for over nine years and does not have the ability to hear or speak. Recently, she injured herself whilst sleepwalking and was unable to call out for help during the night.
Not only was this distressing, but it once again highlighted the urgent need for these children to be able to access crucial services that could help their hearing and speech development.
Rest assured, Kalpana is in good hands at a hospital in the capital city, being supported by her community and supporting nonprofit organizations to ensure her speedy and safe recovery. It’s never been more important to give these children the opportunity to see a healthcare provider, and get them on the path to assist with their ear health.
It’s our pleasure to also share that Kalpana is an excellent student, adores her friends at RHERI and is incredibly social, kind and caring. She can hear some sounds in her left ear and we are hopeful that evaluation by medical doctors may expand her opportunities for hearing. P.S. She loves badminton.😀
