In August, SafeHavens hosted its first Friends in Conversation gathering at the Kaysville Library in Utah.

The purpose was simple but powerful: to bring people together in meaningful conversation about our work and the impact it is having on children and families around the world.

Two sessions were held, each beginning with heartfelt reflections from Sid Winward, who shared her experiences working alongside Dr. Bobbie and the children and staff at RHERI in Nepal. With her professional background in supporting deaf children, Sid offered valuable insight into the challenges and opportunities of the Avasar! Hearing Project.

Amy Horrocks, CEO of SafeHavens, presented stories and images from our programs, while Board Director Mindy Nielsen spoke about her passion for nonprofit work and why SafeHavens’ mission matters to her. Attendees included two Davis County educators who work with deaf and hearing-impaired children—both left deeply interested in the Avasar! Hearing Project and eager to continue the conversation.

Though small in size, the gathering was rich in engagement. Participants asked thoughtful questions about Nepal, the children at RHERI, and how they could help. Sid later shared that her friends were moved by the idea that these children had never been seen by a hearing specialist, sparking discussion about how their own families would be impacted without access to care.

This first event proved that small conversations can plant seeds for meaningful partnerships. Follow-up meetings are being planned with educators and community members who want to explore ways of supporting SafeHavens.

We are grateful to Sid for organizing, to Mindy for sharing her voice, to our friend Rick for his design support, and to all who attended and gave their time. This gathering affirmed what we know to be true: when people come together in conversation, awareness grows and the circle of care expands.
